One of the most famous pilgrimage sites in Europe is the shrine of St. James at Compostela. The way to Compostela is marked by stone crosses on pillars called "cruceiros", and countless pilgrims (including some of our parishioners) have passed these crosses on their way. These journeys are important symbols of the pilgrimage that each and every one of us travels in the Christian life. Our life is a journey, not an aimless one, but one with a destination. The journey was made possible by the Paschal Mystery of Christ – His Death and Resurrection. Along the way we enjoy the protection and help of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Saints, like St. James. May this statue remind us of the goal of this life: a destination in the Father’s own house in heaven.
This "cruceiro" was donated to our parish, made to resemble the crosses found on pilgrimage routes to Compostela. The stone sculpture was carved in Spain and assembled by parishioners in July 2021. It marks the way leading up to our church, reminding us of our own pilgrim journey towards Heaven.
The cross at the very top of the column depicts Christ crucified on the western face, and Our Lady on the eastern face, while the Apostle James appears on the column.
