What is the 40 Hours Devotion?
The 40 Hours Devotion is 40 hours of continuous Eucharistic Adoration offered in a parish or cathedral. It's important to note here that the hours are shared by the community - the devotion does not mean an individual spends 40 hours in the church!
The devotion may have originated in medieval practices of Eucharistic Adoration during Holy Week, commemorating the 40 hours between Jesus' burial and resurrection. The number 40 has other important associations in Scripture as well, linked to moments of intensive preparation: the 40 days Moses fasted before receiving the revelation of the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai; the 40 years the Israelites wandered in the desert before entering the Promised Land; and finally, the 40 days Jesus fasted before beginning His public ministry.
In the 16th century, the 40 Hours of Adoration became more formally instituted as a devotion, helping to reawaken Eucharistic devotion in the faithful following the challenge of the Protestant Reformation.
In our current day, the 40 Hours is an opportunity to renew and deepen our love for Our Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament. Like Mary, the sister of Martha, we take a little time to sit at the feet of Jesus and focus on the one thing necessary: our relationship with God.
