MYTH: Volunteering is too much of a time commitment.
FACT: In most instances, you can set the amount of time you are available, and you are never obligated to give a time commitment that is beyond your comfort. The volunteer opportunities that come through St. Philip can be one-time projects or ongoing commitments—it is up to you! The key to not feeling burnt out is to define your limits and communicate them.
MYTH: Volunteering takes time away from my family.
FACT: Did you know that many of the volunteer opportunities that are available at both St. Philip and in the community are family-friendly? In many cases, you just have to ask, and you will likely be able to bring a loved one(s) with you. The benefits from volunteering as a family are innumerable!
MYTH: I have to have specialized skills in order to volunteer.
FACT: There is a place at the volunteering table for EVERYONE. Communicate your concerns, hesitations, strengths, etc., to the volunteer coordinator and they will likely be able to find a fit for you. Help from anyone is always needed, even if it takes a little time to find that perfect fit.
MYTH: There are too many hardships in the world for me to make a difference.
FACT: Acts of charity do not need to be large-scale; in fact, working at a very local, individual level can often have bigger impact. If you are able to even make a difference in just one person’s life, that is one more person who has benefited from your kindness and generosity.
More great reasons to consider volunteering:
Volunteering WILL have a positive impact. Though many volunteers see and experience others’ hardships, they also gain a sense of compassion and are able to see their own usefulness. Once you have participated in service, you become very aware of your ability to effect change.
